Last year, ECS featured a blog that reviewed “hidden gems” on our website. For this edition, I’m going to highlight aspects of CareerEngine that you may not be aware existed—but are completely worth checking out!
- “Employer Directory”: Did you know there are over 21,000 companies that have recruited at Ohio State? If an employer is in this database, it’s because at some point in time, they expressed interest in hiring a Buckeye. This is a great place to research companies and learn about employers you haven’t heard of but that you might want to consider. Maybe you know you are interested in wind power, but are not sure what companies fall in this category. A simple keyword search returns 37 such companies! In 2016, Columbus was selected out of 77 other cities to build Columbus into a Smart City. As part of this initiative Columbus earned $40 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and $10 million from Vulcan Inc., with additional contributions from local and national partners propelling the total to over $500 million. Smart City’s goal is to improve people’s quality of life, drive economic growth, enhance logistics, and foster sustainability through 15 USDOT projects and 5 Vulcan Inc. priorities.
There are some projects anticipated to be finished by 2018 with others yet to begin. Amidst all this change and innovation, how could your job search not be affected by these activities?

To kick off our two-part series with a spotlight on Columbus, OH we will take a look at the Columbus Idea Foundry. This is an invaluable resource to anyone that enjoys watching their ideas come to life—and it’s located right in our back yard! At the Idea Foundry you can see artists and entrepreneurs alike working on anything from furniture, sculpture, and jewelry to motorcycles, 3D printers, and video games. They even have a blog too! You can check it out after you read this one.
The Idea Foundry is divided into three floors. There is a 20,000 square feet workshop with a wide range of equipment, tools, and design/ assembly space to create and shape ideas. The second and third floors have offices and workspace for members.

I recently accepted a position as an Innovation Assistant Manager with the adidas Group in Portland, Oregon. This role will be within the Basketball Innovation team, and I will be working with athletes, designers, sports scientists, and engineers to help develop the best basketball footwear and apparel in the business.

Being prepared to talk about your strengths and to support them is a common interview tip. Many of us cite soft skills such as teamwork, adaptability, or communication as some of our answers, but may fall short when highlighting technical skills. The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) reported in 2017 that “a composite ‘ideal’ employee… [is] a hard-working individual with appropriate technical training…solid problem-solving skills, and the abilities to communicate well, work in teams, and to continually learn new things.” Finding an appropriate balance between soft and hard skills shows that you are a well-rounded candidate.
