Employer Perspective: Winter Break Career Checklist

Posted:

Today’s blog is written by John Klaus, Recruiter for Ariel Corporation.

Enjoy It

As a recruiter I can assure you that everything you hear about the employment market in 2022 is real. All too real – to be honest! With your future career in mind, what should you be thinking about as you get to experience [one of] your last winter breaks? First, [since] the real world does not come with a month off from your commitments and responsibilities—enjoy it. You’ve earned it.

As a parent of college age children, spend some time with your [family]. They miss you. I can remember when I was in college and being focused on catching up with friends. There is plenty of time for that. I can assure you sitting and chatting with your parents will make their day. Tell them your stories from school. Talk to them about new friends, your hardest test, strangest instructor…simply talk to them.

Prepare for Spring

Now onto your future. I am a recruiter and assume that those that don’t have jobs lined up will attend the [SWE] career fair in late January. Update your resume, make copies, try on a professional outfit and make sure it fits and it is clean. Now do your research as to what type of job you desire.

You may not know exactly what you want to do with your engineering degree, but recruiters don’t want to hear, “I don’t know”, when you are asked what you’re looking for. Be prepared to talk about what you enjoy about engineering whether it comes from group projects, co-op/internship experience or the classroom. Examples might be your desire to solve problems, work on teams, acquire and analyze data, design parts, [or] engage with people.

Think Big Picture

Other big items you should spend your time thinking about over winter break may include your desired location, what type of work culture do you feel most comfortable in, and what does success look like to you. Finding a company that checks all those boxes will take some time and effort. The time and effort are worth it, however, when you find a work home that fits!

Say hi to your family for me.
