Start the Year Thinking About Your Career

Posted:

Today's blog is written by Amy Thaci, Director of Engineering Career Services.

What are you doing after graduation? What do you want to do with your life? Do these questions make you nervous? They most likely do!

Let’s break it down and rephrase into manageable steps….

How do you feel about your choices so far? Are you excited about the prospects?

Those are great places to start because there is never really a final answer. There isn’t a final destination in your career; it will be a winding path. Things will come up that you never even expected. You might change your mind. You might absolutely love what you do and stick with a company for 20+ years! Or you might change jobs every few years. There’s no one formula that works for everyone. I sincerely hope your career is fulfilling, but there will also be some disappointments and things might not go as planned. It’s OK! Believe me, after 30 years of working full time I’ve had my ups and downs too!

Know that no matter what, there are people who can and want to support you. Say yes to the help! ECS is one of those places, so be sure to get registered with us. We can ease your mind when it comes to the myriad of choices you are making. Meeting with ECS can help you with your resume, make sure that you’re ready for that interview, or help you decide on an offer. There are so many ways we support career development, including offering events this fall. I hope you take advantage of them.

On Wed Aug 24th from 10am-12pm as part of our Welcome Back event on the Knowlton Plaza, come meet some of our top companies at Partner Day. It’s a great opportunity for you to connect with a few of ECS’s strongest supporters, companies who want to hire YOU!

Career Week is Sept 6th - 9th. There'll be lots of opportunities for those rising juniors, graduating seniors and graduate students to brush up on professional development skills and talk to employers.

And of course, career fairs such as our E-Council Engineering Expo Sept 20th (virtual from 1-5pm via Handshake) and Sept 21st (in person at the Ohio Union from 1-5pm). We are also collaborating this year with the CFAES for the very first Construction, Civil and Environmental Engineering Career Fair on Sept 22nd from 1-5pm in the Ohio Union. Details are available in Handshake > “Events”.

We also hope graduate students will join us at the above events, and also virtually at the Graduate Student and Postdoc Industry Recruitment Event (EE-GSPIRE) on Sept 20th from 10am-12pm.

You can do this! And we can help!
