Prepare for Your Future During Career Week

Posted:

Calling all rising juniors, graduating seniors, and graduate students! Career Week is just one week away (September 20th-24th) and is jam packed with in-person and virtual events that will help set you up for success while searching for a full-time job. Career Week is strategically placed a week before the E-Council Engineering Expo to ensure you are “career fair ready.” From employer partnered workshops, to 1:1 sessions, and networking opportunities, you won’t want to miss it. While some Career Week events are only for the students listed above, there are several events that all engineering students are welcome to attend.

What to Expect:

Employer Panel

To kickoff Career Week, join our Career Week employer sponsors at the employer panel where they will provide job search advice and an insider’s view of the hiring process.

*Pro-tip: You will have the opportunity to ask panelists questions during the Q&A portion of the event. Do your research by brushing up on the companies that will be attending and ask questions that you are curious about. By asking questions it makes you stand out and shows that you are engaged in the session--even virtually!

1:1 Sessions

From resume reviews to mock interviews, LinkedIn reviews, or elevator pitches, sign up for a 10-minute slot with an employer of the day to review any of these topic areas. Not only do these sessions allow you to gain advice from the experts themselves, but it also is a great way to continue to grow your network. (These sessions are open to rising juniors, seniors, and graduate students).

*Pro-tip: Keep in mind that these sessions are 10-minutes which often go quite fast. Make sure to have your most recent resume uploaded and visible on Handshake and have it ready on your laptop just in case!

Virtual Sessions/Workshops

Whether the session is presented by an ECS Career Advisor, an employer, or both, there will be a variety of career related topics to brush up on. Work visa options for international students and career fair preparation are just a few of the topics you can expect. Attend as many events that fit your schedule!

*Pro-tip: As mentioned before, there are a lot of ways you can stand out to employers in a virtual session. Listen carefully for how questions can be addressed during the session and turn your camera on so employers can see you. Take notes throughout the session to help you develop questions and write down key information that you want to remember later, if needed.

Industry Night

Career Week’s signature event, Industry Night, will take place at Curl Market-Viewpoint North (2nd floor) on Thursday, September 23rd. Industry Night is a mini-career fair style event where you will be able to network with employer representatives. Industry Night will be timed entry, so make sure to RSVP to the event in Handshake based on your last name (Handshake>Events>type “ECS: CAREER WEEK: Industry Night” in the search bar>choose session based on last name).

Companies that will be participating include: Armstrong World Industries; Blue Horseshoe Solutions; Cleveland-Cliffs; CMTA, Inc; DHL Supply Chain; Eaton Corporation; General Electric (GE); Horizontal Wireline; Infoverity; Medpace; Niagara Bottling; Vertiv; The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company.

*Pro-tip: Before the event make sure to develop your elevator pitch. During the event, ask intentional questions and conclude your conversation by collecting information from the representative(s) you spoke with. Afterwards, considering sending a thank you note/email within 24-48 hours.
