Discover a Key to Unique Opportunities

ECS offers a wide variety of tools to help students in the job search process. One of the options we provide is located in Handshake under “Career Center” > “Resources” titled “Other Opportunities”. Often overlooked, this section includes information about events or experiences that companies are hosting. Check out some of the most common categories you can find to enhance your resume, job search, or career interests.

Career Fairs

Companies and third party recruiters put on career fairs at no cost to students, and many of these are virtual! Enjoy the experience of looking for specific companies or opportunities while staying in the comfort of your home. Many of these career fairs will target specific industries or majors so that you aren’t trying to navigate through 100s of unrelated companies. You will also see career fairs for veteran jobseekers and students with disabilities.

Networking

Some companies just want to get to know you better! By hosting their own networking event they can get to know interested applicants. You might find events specifically for underrepresented groups, such as women in engineering. These events are great chances to get a tour of the company, meet with recruiters and engineers, and see what kind of opportunities the company has for your area of interest. These can be specific to just one company, or larger events where multiple companies will participate.

Research/Internships/Fellowships

There are also nationwide fellowship, research, and internships that are available in “Other Opportunities”. These will often be paid positions that are targeting a specific group of students. These experiences are a great way to get to know a company, university, or specialized area and jump into the work they are doing.

Competitions

Employers often want to see the practical application of students’ degrees or majors, so they host competitions that let you practice your skills. Not only can these be good ways to get to know a company and show that you are the best candidate for the job, they are also good resume builders for future positions. Whether they are individual or group, these competitions help students show their practical abilities. Keep your eye out for “Make-a-thons”, “Hack-a-thons”, and other projects!

Other opportunities can be a great place to visit if you are looking for ways to apply your engineering skills and enhance your resume. It is updated as we are made aware of new opportunities, so continue to check the site frequently!
