Consider Unique Engineering Career Paths

Posted:

When you chose engineering as your major, it’s likely you did so because you were good at science and math, or perhaps you had a family member who was an engineer, or maybe you simply enjoyed problem solving. Now that you are at Ohio State, and you are on your way to becoming an engineer, what does that mean job-wise? Typically design engineering is the first role that comes to mind when you are thinking through your options. However, engineers have a multitude of possibilities when it comes to career paths. Consider that there are positions like applications engineer, test engineer, quality control engineer, product engineer, project engineer, and marketing engineer. There's also consulting, technical sales, and entrepreneurship, which is what I am going to focus on in today’s blog.

If you are an engineer, chances are your technical skills are pretty sharp. Some people, however, really love combining their “people skills” with the technical side. If you have strong interpersonal skills, appreciate diversity in your work, and enjoy building relationships and working with others, then you should consider exploring technical sales, consulting, and/or entrepreneurship. Next week is Engineers Week, and ECS is offering programming that allows you to take a deeper dive into learning what these types of jobs are all about through our “Careers in” Nights series.

ECS will feature three unique career paths focusing on consulting, tech sales, and startups. A mini panel of engineers working in that field will participate in a Q&A session facilitated by ECS. After the panel concludes, there will be time for casual conversation—so that you can get your lingering questions answered and make connections with people working in those roles. Refreshments will also be provided. Mark your calendars for the upcoming “Careers in” Nights (all sessions will take place in 410 Hitchcock Hall):

  • Careers in Consulting: Tuesday, Feb. 19th from 5:30pm-6:30pm
  • Careers in Technical Sales: Wednesday, Feb. 20th from 5:30pm-6:30pm
  • Careers in Startups: Thursday, Feb. 21st from 5:30pm-6:30pm

Engineering Career Services is committed to connecting employers and students. The “Careers in” Nights are a once-a-year opportunity to explore some lesser known career paths in which many of our alumni have flourished. Don’t miss this chance to discover something new and find out what more you could do with your engineering degree!
