Do you ever get tired of trying to fit all of your experiences on a single page resume? Do you feel that simply explaining your projects doesn’t give them justice? Trying to figure out ways that you can set yourself apart from the competition?

Trying to figure out where you want to be on this spectrum is an important part of your research process. While there is ultimately no right answer, there may be a better fit for you. Each company is unique, no matter their size, but there are some things to consider as you determine your interests and priorities.

There are a lot of different things that make up your job experience. Salary, culture, benefits, communication style, flexibility, group environment, location, advancement opportunities, and training programs are all things that go into choosing what company you want to work for. The Ohio State Engineering Job Shadow Program is a unique way for you to connect with employers. It’s rare that you get to spend the better part of a day learning about a specific company or industry on-site and meeting a variety of company representatives. Also noteworthy? Typically in the world of recruitment, the employer chooses you. With job shadow, so long as you match the event’s criteria and can transport yourself to the event, YOU get to decide what employers you would like to visit. Last year, ~80% of employers participating in job shadow stated that they used the program as a recruitment tool. So it’s very possible that your time spent developing insights and connections at the shadow could lead to future employment. I have had the pleasure interning three times with NASA! My first two internships were at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Cape Canaveral, FL (Spring and Summer of 2016). My third internship was at Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, TX. While working at NASA’s space centers, I contributed to the coolest projects out there!
At KSC, I was involved in design and testing of an instrument that would go to Mars or an asteroid and characterize the organic compounds on the surface. It can be frustrating when a CareerEngine job posting seems to be a perfect fit but you get the annoying brown oval telling you otherwise. This blog article will cover the reasons (and solutions, if applicable) for a non-qualifying status.
When perusing job postings on CareerEngine, clicking on the title of the job will take you to a page with details of the position, including why it is you don’t qualify. Look on the right sidebar of that page for a section titled “Application Status.” There it will have one (or more) of the following error messages.
