NACE defines third-party recruiters as “agencies, organizations, or individuals recruiting candidates for temporary, part-time, or full-time employment opportunities other than for their own needs.” There are several different categories of third-party recruiters, including employment/ staffing agencies, contract recruiters, and resume referral firms. Ohio State career services offices work with third-party recruiters but require that these firms adhere to our policies before posting positions.
Employment agencies list positions for a number of organizations and receive payment from the hiring organization when a referred candidate is hired. For many individuals, self-employment as an independent contractor can be a rewarding and satisfying career option. As is true with any employment relationship you enter, it is important to understand the roles and responsibilities of everyone involved.
What would my employment status be as an independent contractor?
Independent contractors are self-employed and enter into a contracted agreement to provide services to a client in exchange for an agreed upon fee (lump sum, hourly, weekly, monthly, piecemeal, per assignment, and so forth.). Independent contractors are not placed on an employer’s payroll; instead, the independent contractor typically invoices the client for work performed, and the client pays the independent contractor directly. The start of fall semester might bring a mix of emotions. The excitement of being back on campus to see friends is generally met with the realization that summer is over. Sure, the first week might be relatively easy, but as an engineering student the pace of classes picks up pretty quickly. Not to mention the job search, which can bring added stress. We often make sure that everyone and everything else is taken care of before ourselves. But, I challenge you to put yourself first this year. Lean on your buckeye community and take advantage of the great resources out there to ensure you feel the best you can so that you can be successful!
