We are joined once again by several recruiters with CoverMyMeds offering advice for your LinkedIn strategy.
What are the essential elements of a LinkedIn Profile?
- Include a picture! Profiles without a picture seem pretty bare.
- Don’t just list a job title and dates of employment. Include a description of what you accomplished. It can be short – 1-2 sentences, or 3 bullets but should give the reader a good sense of what your actual responsibilities are/were, especially if you’re actively looking for new opportunities.
- Education details can help establish commonality between you and the company/recruiter/hiring manager/etc.
- The “Featured skills and Endorsements” section does not tend to carry a ton of weight as endorsements do not require much effort for other people to give you. How does CoverMyMeds use LinkedIn as a recruiting tool?
- We use it as a tool to gather additional information, or confirm information, about candidates we’re working with during the hiring process. Sometimes, this is simply curiosity. Sometimes, though, information on a resume doesn’t quite add up, so we’ll cross-check it against the LinkedIn profile. In those cases, sometimes the LinkedIn profile clarifies things (“Oh! That wasn’t job-hopping, it was a new title at the same company!”). But sometimes, we’ve caught folks in a lie (“Hmm… looks like you got laid off 6 months ago, even though your resume says you still work for Acme Company.”) So – make sure your resume and LinkedIn …

When many people think about engineering careers, design engineering is often the first to come to mind. Others might think of career options like test engineer, quality control engineer, product engineer, etc. The beauty of this field is that there are SO many paths, students often don’t realize all of the options available to them! In ECS we meet with a variety of employers, many of which are trying to find talent for more unique technical careers that perhaps students don’t immediately think of when they hear “engineering.” Enter the new “Careers in…” series happening this February!

Happy New Year! Maybe it is a new year’s resolution or time spent fielding questions from family about future plans over the holidays, but this time of year I sense a rejuvenated interest in the job search from students. It can be overwhelming to look through all the resources available, and what’s worse is that many valuable tools get lost in the sheer amount that exist. ECS recommends that you start your job search using Jobs for OSU Students within CareerEngine since postings are from companies specifically seeking Buckeyes. But, there are some great resources for supplementing your CareerEngine search. Let’s take this time to de-clutter and discover four external job search resources that you probably didn’t know about.

Last year, ECS featured a blog that reviewed “hidden gems” on our website. For this edition, I’m going to highlight aspects of CareerEngine that you may not be aware existed—but are completely worth checking out!
- “Employer Directory”: Did you know there are over 21,000 companies that have recruited at Ohio State? If an employer is in this database, it’s because at some point in time, they expressed interest in hiring a Buckeye. This is a great place to research companies and learn about employers you haven’t heard of but that you might want to consider. Maybe you know you are interested in wind power, but are not sure what companies fall in this category. A simple keyword search returns 37 such companies! Employers can opt in to including their contact information as well, so if you are lucky, you may come across an email address so you can better …
