Introducing the International Student Job Search EGuide

Posted:

From understanding work authorization to cultural norms, the job search can be difficult to navigate as an international student. That is why Engineering Career Services created the International Student Job Search EGuide located in Handshake under “Career Center” > “Resources”. Gather advice from start to finish as you pursue your career goals (bonus: the Eguide will be upgraded to a more visual, user-friendly version this spring). Here are a few sections to expect as you read through the guide:

Work Authorization Options

Learn the difference between work authorization types including OPT, CPT, H-1B Visa and J-1, along with the restrictions associated with each one.

Networking Tips

Practice networking strategies to build connections and confidence. Learn about programs such as the English Conversation Program and Global Engagement, offering an introduction to building relationships on campus.

Strategies for the U.S. Job Market

Develop a plan to create your resume, discover companies, and apply to positions. Building your confidence through skill development and getting creative in your job search strategies are key!

Job Search Best Practices

Uncover resources, tips, and events that provide insight into companies that hire international students. Some companies may not be familiar with the hiring process for international students, so understanding employer perceptions and employment options are important.

In addition, check out The Office of International Affairs' (OIA) monthly workshops to help you understand the Optional Practical Training (OPT) and Curricular Practical Training (CPT) process and expectations.
