The dreaded “Tell me about yourself” question seems simple enough, but it’s the one that trips up many candidates during interviews. It’s such a broad question—what exactly do employers want to know about you? Since this question is usually one of the first asked, having a polished and well thought out response can be the difference between starting with a great impression or getting off on the wrong foot.
While this question seems broad, it is important to remember you are in an interview. Therefore, irrelevant personal information is not necessary to include. An ideal response would offer a brief academic summary and a quick highlight of strengths and relevant experience. Did you know that prior to 2016, the Engineering Expo career fair was held on one day? Due to the number of employers interested in recruiting top engineering talent from Ohio State, we switched to a two day career fair in 2016. While the two day career fair created more opportunities for you by allowing more employers to attend the career fair, you’ve told us over and over again that attending two back-to-back career fair days is exhausting― and we agree!

A degree in engineering does not necessarily mean your professional role will be “Engineer”. With a variety of career tracks and industries available, the role you step into could have a number of names. That can make it difficult to determine keywords and position titles to browse when conducting your job search.
Discovering Keywords and Positions
On our ECS homepage you will find Alumni profiles with buckeye engineering stories. These profiles also include the position title and responsibilities of the alumnus, enabling you to uncover possible roles, industries, and career tracks. Biomedical engineering students, have you considered a role as a Clinical Specialist or Medical Device Sales Consultant? Food, agricultural, biological, and ecological engineering students, what about a Business Technology Consultant or Product Manager position?
