To kick off our two-part series with a spotlight on Columbus, OH we will take a look at the Columbus Idea Foundry. This is an invaluable resource to anyone that enjoys watching their ideas come to life—and it’s located right in our back yard! At the Idea Foundry you can see artists and entrepreneurs alike working on anything from furniture, sculpture, and jewelry to motorcycles, 3D printers, and video games. They even have a blog too! The Idea Foundry is divided into three floors. There is a 20,000 square feet workshop with a wide range of equipment, tools, and design/ assembly space to create and shape ideas. The second and third floors have offices and workspace for members.

Tell us about your most recent position.
I recently accepted a position as an Innovation Assistant Manager with the adidas Group in Portland, Oregon. This role will be within the Basketball Innovation team, and I will be working with athletes, designers, sports scientists, and engineers to help develop the best basketball footwear and apparel in the business.
What core skills or qualities do you think employers find most useful?
In my experience, flexibility and dependability have been two of the most important characteristics. Being prepared to talk about your strengths and to support them is a common interview tip. Many of us cite soft skills such as teamwork, adaptability, or communication as some of our answers, but may fall short when highlighting technical skills. The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) reported in 2017 that “a composite ‘ideal’ employee… [is] a hard-working individual with appropriate technical training…solid problem-solving skills, and the abilities to communicate well, work in teams, and to continually learn new things.” Finding an appropriate balance between soft and hard skills shows that you are a well-rounded candidate.
