How can the Engineering Career Success Conference (ECSC) benefit me?

If you’ve been checking your email, snail mail, or even your CareerEngine homepage you might’ve seen information about the upcoming ECSC on August 29th and wondered if you should attend. I mean what’s the rush? You still have a whole academic year until you graduate- right? Though there is still time to job search, you might be interested to know that 70% of on campus interviews take place within the Autumn Semester. Recruiting schedules vary by company, but many begin to seek out top career employment talent in the fall. Graduating seniors who attend the ECSC will be prepared with professional success skills from the beginning of the semester.

We all know how busy the year gets after the first few weeks of classes and how quickly you jump from being an exploring candidate to a prospective employee. Getting off to the right start during your last year by attending the ECSC will make the transition from student to professional less painful, and more easily managed. I already know what you’re thinking, so let’s get a few things out of the way first.

Yes, it’s on a Saturday. No, it’s not a football game day (I checked!). Yes, registration begins at 9:30am, but coffee will be provided (so will breakfast and lunch-I checked that too!). Now that you are out of excuses not to attend, let’s get down to a few of the reasons you should be there.

  • Networking: 20-25 industry professionals who have recruited from Ohio State will be in attendance. Not only will some of them be presenting key topics, but there will also be a networking event that will allow you to build professional relationships.
  • Expert advice: If you are like the rest of us and feel a little uneasy about the unknowns, then getting a chance to be a part of Dr. Melissa Briggs-Phillips’ talk will be a welcome part of the conference. As you’re enjoying lunch, Dr. Briggs-Phillips will be walking you through specific action steps that will encourage you to become comfortable and confident with the uncertainty. With her action items you will have the tools to successfully launch yourself from a student to a thriving professional.
  • Best practices: ECS staff meets with thousands of students and employers and is able to bring all of that advice and expertise to session topics. In collaboration with attending employers, you will get the inside scoop on what skills and strategies you should use in the job search and beyond.
  • Materials: Who doesn’t like gifts? With registration, not only do you get fed, but you also get a few other goodies as well, including: a padfolio for organizing your professional materials during your job search, a professional development certificate recognizing your participation, and lastly—the prospect of winning some great raffle prizes that will be given away during the day.

As you weigh all the benefits of the ECSC against all your excuses not to attend just think back to how quickly your experience here at OSU has gone. You know better than anyone else that you have to take advantage of the career advancement opportunities you have before it’s too late!

So what are you waiting for?  Register for the ECSC here.
