Get excited – fall recruiting season has arrived! For those of you who are new to the job search scene and aren’t familiar with the recruiting cycle, on-campus interviewing opportunities are the most abundant in the fall. In fact, over 65% of on-campus recruiting visits happen in the months of September, October, and November. Maximize your chances for securing an internship, co-op, or full-time position by making sure you are active and engaged with our office in the fall! Here are some tips for how to capitalize on your efforts:
Look for companies who will be interviewing on campus – on-campus interview opportunities are listed in CareerEngine under the “Jobs” tab. Quickly identify them by the semester/year designation following the job title. For example “Engineering Intern (AU14)”. Once you click into the posting, you’ll also see a notification that the job is an on-campus interview opportunity. Pay close attention to the deadlines listed on the right-hand side. This tells you when you can submit your resume for consideration and when you are able to sign up for an interview if selected.
Keep a close eye on your email – sometimes companies will browse the resumes books to target candidates for on-campus interviews. Check your email regularly so you don’t miss out on communication from a potential employer. Also, ECS will occasionally send out emails to qualifying students about interview opportunities or other on-campus recruiting events. But don’t rely solely on your email! You can always check the status of your OCR application, or view upcoming events, by logging into CareerEngine. This can help to ensure you don’t miss important deadlines or events.
Check out companies who are holding interviews the day after the Engineering Career Expo – over 50 companies will be conducting interviews the day after the fall career fair (September 25). This means that on the day of the career fair, you could potentially be signed up on the spot for an interview! You can find a list of companies holding next-day interviews in your career fair program.
Attend events surrounding OCR visits – many companies will hold tech-talks, info sessions, workshops, and other events surrounding their OCR visit. Be sure to attend these events and talk to the recruiters. This can help them remember you later on! In some cases, even if you weren’t initially selected for an interview through CareerEngine, you may be able to secure a spot by showing your interest at an event.
Know that there are a lot of fantastic OCR opportunities, but they aren’t your only hope! – there are typically around 275+ OCR schedules for hundreds of companies in the fall. It is certainly a wise idea to focus your efforts around the companies that are interviewing on campus BUT also know there are many great companies who simply can’t make it to campus. They might find you through the resume book or through a job posting. These could result in a phone interview, Skype interview, or on-site interview. Don’t overlook these opportunities!
Practice your interview skills! – make sure you are prepared for interviewing season by brushing up on your skills. Check out the "Document Library" in CareerEngine for interviewing tips, use the Impress mock interview module to challenge yourself with an online mock interview, or schedule an appointment with an ECS advisor for an in-person mock interview.
