Why do I have to activate (aka unblock) my account every quarter?
April 5, 2012
“Activating” or “unblocking” your job search account should be done the first week of every quarter (soon to be semesters). Activating early in the quarter ensures that you don’t miss out on job opportunities. The benefits of being an active candidate are twofold:
1) You can submit your resume to on-campus interview opportunities and job postings through the ECS job search system.
2) Should employers be inclined to pull resumes from the job search system (or contact ECS to do so), yours will be included if you match up with the qualities they are seeking.
The bottom line: If your account is unblocked, you are visible to employers and can engage in a proactive job search. If you are blocked, you are essentially invisible to employers and won’t get very far obtaining an internship, co-op, full-time or part-time job.
Activating your account is comprised of two quick and painless steps:
1) Uploading an updated resume into your job search account in the “Documents” tab. We have you do so because at a basic level, your GPA is likely to fluctuate each quarter—and it needs to be accurately represented on the resume. Additionally, as you progress through your coursework, you will want to update the classes you are listing (if you have a “Coursework” section of your resume). Other things that you’ll want to add/update/remove as you progress through your academic career include: class projects, work experience, etc.
2) Completing the Quarterly Activation Form (QAF) on the “Home” tab of your job search account. (Scroll all the way to the lower right-hand corner of this page…it’s there, I promise! It looks like a lightning bolt.) The QAF lets you tell ECS (and employers) what type of job(s) you are seeking (internship, co-op, part-time, full-time) and also when you would be available to work. The QAF takes only a minute to do.
So to answer the original question, “Why do I have to activate/unblock my job search account every quarter?” The answer: Quality control. The activation process keeps companies coming back to ECS to recruit OSU engineering students. Employers like knowing that the candidates they are seeing have resumes that are fresh and up-to-date. They also like knowing when you are open to working and what kind of job you want…this way they can target students who fit with their hiring needs.
Now, if you haven’t done so yet…go activate your account!
